The Forgotten

The Neo Geo Pocket was SNK's original hand held system. It was released in Japan in late 1998, and discontinued in 1999, with the advent of the Neo Geo Pocket Color, due to lower than expected sales with the Monochrome Neo Geo Pocket.

In 1987, Epyx created the Handy; a device that would turn into the Atari Lynx in 1989. It was the first color portable ever made, as well as the first with a backlit screen. It featured a color LCD screen with backlight, networking support with up to 17 other players, and advanced hardware that allowed the zooming and scaling of sprites. The Lynx could also be turned upside down to accommodate left-handed players. However, all these features came at a very high price point, which drove consumers to seek cheaper alternatives. The Lynx was also very unwieldy (due to focus groups requesting the machine be bigger so it felt like they "got their money's worth"), consumed batteries very quickly and lacked the third-party support of the alternatives. Due to a high price, short battery life, production shortages, a dearth of compelling games, and Nintendo's aggressive marketing campaign, and despite a redesign in 1991, the Lynx became a commercial failure.

The Sega Game Gear is a handheld game console and was Sega's response to Nintendo's Game Boy. It is the third commercially available color handheld console, after the Atari Lynx and the Turbo Express. Work began on the console in 1989 under the codename "Project Mercury", and the system was released in Japan on October 6, 1990. It was released in North America and Europe in 1991 and in Australia in 1992. Support for the Game Gear was dropped in early 1997.

Blast from the Past

Thundarr the Barbarian was a Saturday morning animated television series, produced by Ruby-Spears Productions. It was broadcast during the early 1980s.
Loosely inspired by R.E. Howard's Conan the Barbarian, Thundarr the Barbarian was set in a future (at the time of production) post-apocalyptic wasteland divided into kingdoms or territories--the majority of which are ruled by wizards--and whose ruins typically featured recognizable geographical features from the United States, such as Mount Rushmore, New York City, or Washington, DC. Other episodes with recognizable settings are located in Central America, while one is in London. Another notable feature of this future Earth is that the Moon is now in two pieces, though both pieces still orbit in proximity to one another, and seem to orbit at roughly the same height as the intact Moon once did. The shattered moon and the ruins of the former human civilization were supposedly caused by the passage of a large rogue asteroid between the Earth and the Moon, which, from scenes shown in the opening sequence, caused radical changes in the Earth's climate, geography, and tidal effects, the latter presumably because of the damage to the Moon. However, by the time period in which the series is set, the Earth and Moon seem to have settled into a new balance. In this setting, Thundarr, a muscular warrior, and his companions Princess Ariel (who was a formidable sorceress) and the Wookiee-like Ookla the Mok battled evil wizards who combined magical spells with technologies from the pre-catastrophe world. Further Star Wars influences can be seen in Thundarr's weapon of choice, the "Sun Sword", which projects a blade-like beam of energy when activated, and can be deactivated so that it is only a hilt. The Sun Sword is magically linked to Thundarr and as such, only he can use it.

The Forgotten

3DO Interactive Multiplayer (most commonly referred to as 'the 3DO') was a line of video game consoles released in 1993 and 1994 by Panasonic, Sanyo and Goldstar. The consoles were manufactured according to specifications created by The 3DO Company, and were originally designed by Dave Needle and RJ Mical of New Technology Group. The system was conceived by entrepreneur and EA Games founder Trip Hawkins. Despite a highly-promoted launch and a host of cutting-edge technologies, the system's high price ($699.95 USD at release) and an over-saturated console market brought the 3DO to a speedy demise.

The Atari Jaguar was a video game console introduced to the US market in November 1993 against the Sega Mega Drive (known in the United States as the Genesis) and the Super Nintendo Entertainment System as a powerful next generation platform. It was touted as the "first 64-bit system". The system eventually wound up as a commercial failure and prompted Atari to finally leave the hardware business.

The PC-FX is NEC's 32-bit successor to its PC Engine (US:TurboGrafx 16) released in Japan on 23 December 1994. The PC-FX only used CDs as opposed to the PCE's (TG16) use of HuCards (it did have a CD peripheral, though). What's unusual about the PC-FX is its computer-like design. It stands upright like a tower computer while most other consoles of that time lay flat. The controller resembled the Sega Mega Drive's in shape, only with more buttons. Another interesting feature was its three expansion ports, as expansion ports are relatively underused in consoles and therefore their inclusion increased the price without offering a great deal to the end user.

The Playdia was a video game console released in 1994 by Bandai. It was only released in Japan. It was intended for a young audience and the controls were suitably simple. It was the only traditional console ever released by Bandai, excluding the handheld WonderSwan line of systems. Bandai did, however, also manufacture the Atmark interactive multimedia player, also known as the Apple Pippin. The release price was from $250 to $300.
Cars from Around the World

The Opel Calibra (badged as a Vauxhall in the UK and a Holden in Australia) was launched in 1989, a front-wheel drive coupé based around the running gear of the Opel Vectra A, (Cavalier under the Vauxhall name) which had been launched the year before. The Calibra, styled by the American head of GM design Europe, Wayne Cherry (retired), is considered by some the most stylish Vauxhall/Opel ever, but being based on the Vectra chassis its ride and handling were not significantly better than that of the family car from which it grew. It was, however, the most aerodynamically efficient Opel ever, with a drag coefficient (Cd) of 0.26. It remained the most aerodynamic mass production car for the next 10 years, until the Honda Insight was launched in 1999 with a Cd of 0.25. Power was initially from 2.0 L 8-valve and 16-valve fuel injected I4, engines but in 1992 a turbocharged 2.0 L engine with four wheel drive and a top speed of 240 km/h (150 mph) was added to the range. In 1994 a 167 hp 2.5 V6 was introduced, thus creating what many considered to be the finest Calibra to date. Available with both manual and automatic transmissions, the V6 wasn't as fast as the Turbo, but was rather more civilised, and proved to be more reliable than the complex 4wd flagship model. During its lifetime, the Calibra was much more popular than its nearest rival, the Ford Probe, which was considered to be too American for most European people's tastes. In 1995, the Vectra A was replaced, but the Calibra continued until the end of 1997, when it was finally axed from the Vauxhall/Opel range. Although a smaller coupe (the Tigra) was available, the marque was left without a mid-sized coupé until the Astra Coupé was launched in 2000.

1988 Ford Telstar TX5

1993 Ford Telstar TX5

The Ford Telstar was an automobile sold by the Ford Motor Company in Asia, Australasia and Africa, comparable in size to the European Ford Sierra and the American Ford Tempo. It has been progressively replaced by the Ford Mondeo. Like the smaller Ford Laser, the Telstar was in fact, based on a model produced by Mazda in Japan. It shared its platform with the Mazda Capella/626, the differences being confined to some styling, engine sizes, and specification. The first model (also known as the AR) was launched in 1983, replacing the Ford Cortina. Unlike the Cortina, or its Sierra successor, the Telstar was usually only available as a sedan or hatchback (known as the TX5). However, after 1988, a Telstar version of the 626 wagon was sold in Japan and New Zealand.
